In a touching display of goodwill amid the start of the new academic year, a lecturer at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Cornelius Ellah, surprised his first-year journalism students with small cash gifts during their lecture, aiming to ease their transition into university life.

The incident unfolded  in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, where the lecturer – described by sources as a dedicated educator – wrapped up his session with an unconventional act of kindness. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the lecturer shared that an “inner voice” prompted him to distribute modest sums to each of the newly admitted students, amounts sufficient for a soft drink or transportation fares across Calabar.

“This was simply from my heart, a token to welcome them into 2026.”  He framed the gesture as an informal “orientation,” emphasizing the importance of community and support for freshers navigating the challenges of higher education in Nigeria.

Students in the class, all first-year enrollees, reacted with visible awe, staring in surprise as the lecturer personally handed out the gifts. “It was like seeing him for the first time,” one student recounted, highlighting the unexpected nature of the moment in an otherwise routine lecture.

The educator, who stressed he is “not a rich man” but remains “deeply grateful to God for the gift of students,” expressed hopes for a fruitful year ahead. As lectures resume across UNICROSS and other Nigerian institutions, this act underscores the human side of academia, where small gestures can foster motivation and belonging.

Sources within the university noted that such personal initiatives align with efforts to improve student welfare amid economic pressures like rising transportation costs in Cross River State and the school fee and accommodation increment which has left the students and disarray. These school and accommodation fees were increased by the University’s new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey.

As the 2026 academic calendar gains momentum, educators and students alike are reminded of the power of empathy in shaping positive learning environments. The lecturer concluded his reflection with a prayer for the students’ success, affirming that “by the grace of God, they will keep seeing me” as a mentor throughout their journey.

This story highlights ongoing discussions in Nigerian education about innovative ways to support freshers, from financial aid to mental health resources. For more updates on university life in Cross River State, stay tuned.
