Meta is preparing to introduce premium subscription plans across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, marking a major shift in how billions of users interact with the company’s platforms.

According to reports cited by TechCrunch, the paid plans will unlock advanced features and AI-powered tools, while keeping the core services free for regular users.

“We want to build products that people are willing to pay for,” Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said recently, adding that AI tools would play a central role in the company’s next growth phase.

What the New Meta Subscriptions Will Offer

At the center of the plan is a push toward premium functionality, and not basic access. Sources familiar with the rollout say subscribers will gain access to enhanced AI assistants, smarter content creation tools, and expanded controls for chats and accounts across Meta’s apps.

Meanwhile, Meta stressed that everyday features such as messaging, posting, and calling will remain free. These subscriptions are positioned as optional upgrades, not paywalls.

How It Differs From Meta Verified

However, Meta has been quick to draw a line between the new subscriptions and Meta Verified, its existing paid service that offers account verification and direct customer support.

“This is not just about a badge,” a Meta product manager said. “These plans are about what the apps can actually do for you.”

The company believes creators, professionals, and businesses will see the most value, especially as AI becomes more embedded in social media workflows.

Mixed Reactions From Users

“Nobody asked for subscriptions on WhatsApp”

Few hours after reports of the plan went viral, reactions online are divided. Some users welcomed the idea of powerful AI tools built directly into familiar apps. Others questioned whether social platforms that have always been free can convince users to start paying.

“Nobody asked for subscriptions on WhatsApp,” one Nigerian user wrote on X. “If it affects free messaging, that’s a problem.”

Meta insists it won’t.

What Happens Next

For now, Meta says the subscriptions will be tested in selected markets before any wider rollout. And at the time of this publishing, Pricing details and launch timelines have not yet been announced.

But one thing is clear, Meta is betting that the future of social media is no longer just ads. It is paid features, AI, and users willing to upgrade.
