Students residing in the hostels of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) staged a late-night protest on 26 February over the persistent lack of water and electricity on campus.

The hostellers said the outage, which has lasted for several days, has made living conditions extremely difficult and unsafe. According to the students, the absence of basic amenities has disrupted daily routines, affected personal hygiene, and created an environment not conducive to academic work.

Witnesses reported that students gathered within the hostel premises chanting and demanding immediate intervention from the school management. They stressed that access to water and power is a fundamental requirement for students who live on campus.

“UNICROSS hostel fee was increased from 35 thousand naira to 90 thousand naira, yet the living conditions has remained unbearable”

One of the protesting students described the situation as “unbearable,” noting that many students now depend on expensive alternatives outside the school to meet basic needs.

The protest comes amid growing concerns about welfare conditions in the institution. This development follows recent tensions on campus, including the reported stabbing of a Mass Communication student during an attempted assault within the school environment.. It also comes after staff actions that disrupted academic activities earlier this session..

FAWONA gathered that letters were reportedly written to see the VC, but it was reportedly rejected.

“They wrote letters to see the VC, it was rejected, everyone is afraid that something bad might happen again because they are the only people living inside the school,” a source who pleaded to remain anonymous said.

Students are now calling on the university authorities to urgently restore water and electricity to the hostels and implement lasting solutions to prevent a recurrence at the UNICROSS hostel.

As of the time of filing this report, the university management has not issued an official statement regarding the situation.

More updates will follow as the story develops.
