Senegal secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a convincing 3–1 comeback victory over Sudan, reinforcing their credentials as one of the tournament favourites.

The defending champions recovered from an early setback to become the first team to qualify for the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals, thereby showcasing experience, depth, and tactical discipline.

Sudan stunned Senegal inside six minutes when Aamir Abdallah found the net with a well-taken strike, briefly igniting hopes of a major upset.

Football analyst Akin Adebayo noted that the early goal tested Senegal’s mentality.

That opening goal was a serious psychological test. Senegal did not panic, and that calm response is what separates champions from underdogs.”

Senegal’s response was led by Pape Gueye, who equalised in the 29th minute before scoring again in first-half stoppage time to turn the match on its head.

Former AFCON winner and pundit Sunday Oliseh praised the midfielder’s impact. He said,

“Gueye controlled the tempo and punished Sudan when it mattered. His goals were not just technical. They were statements of authority.”

Senegal dominated possession after the equaliser, forcing Sudan deeper and limiting their attacking outlets. The match was put beyond doubt in the 77th minute when 17-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye came off the bench to score Senegal’s third goal, capping a composed team performance.

According to youth football expert Musa Abdullahi, Mbaye’s contribution highlights Senegal’s long-term planning.

Introducing a teenager in a knockout game and getting that level of composure tells you everything about Senegal’s football structure.”

Captain Sadio Mané played a leadership role throughout the encounter, providing assists and guiding the team through moments of pressure.

With the win, Senegal moves into the quarter-finals, where they will face either Mali or Tunisia. Their ability to respond decisively after conceding early has further strengthened belief in their title defence.

Tactical analyst Femi Martins believes Senegal is peaking at the right time.

This performance showed adaptability. Senegal can suffer, adjust, and still dominate. That is a dangerous combination in tournament football.”

Sudan’s AFCON campaign ends despite a spirited display that exceeded pre-tournament expectations.

Senegal’s blend of experience and emerging talent continues to set them apart at AFCON 2025. As the competition narrows, the defending champions remain firmly in contention for another continental crown.
