In an inspiring culmination of academic perseverance, Comrd Ewelu Otu Okoi, a prominent student leader at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), has successfully defended his Master of Science (MSc) thesis in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Computing. This achievement not only highlights his scholarly dedication but also underscores his influential role in student governance during his postgraduate tenure.

In a heartfelt Facebook post shared today, Ewelu described the defense as “a profound academic accomplishment,” attributing it to “years of discipline, resilience, sleepless nights, and an unshakable belief in growth through knowledge and innovation.”

He dedicated the milestone to his parents, paying tribute to his late father’s enduring legacy and his mother’s unwavering, sacrificial support. “Even when I tried to resist asking, you always showed up, never questioning what the money was for, only believing in my dreams,” he wrote. “This victory is as much yours as it is mine.”

Ewelu’s gratitude extended to the Department of Computer Science and his lecturers for their “guidance, mentorship, and academic support,” which he said shaped his research and professional outlook. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed “deep gratitude for how far I have come” and readiness for future challenges.

Beyond his academic success, Ewelu has credible and realistic achievements as a postgraduate student, blending leadership with scholarly pursuits. As the Executive President of the UNICROSS Postgraduate Students Government, Ewelu has been at the forefront of students advocacy.

He played a key role in a historic election, delivering a speech and appointing Francis Odey as chief of staff, while acknowledging the contributions of predecessors like Austin Kekong.

His leadership extended to initiatives like pushing for computer-based tests in exams, demonstrating his commitment to modernizing education amid Nigeria’s evolving academic landscape.

Ewelu’s influence in student politics dates back further, with involvement in groups like the Music Recreation (MUSREC) where he contributed to inclusive leadership transitions as early as 2021.

More recently, in September 2025, he was honored with an award from UNICROSS (formerly Cross River University of Technology), recognizing his executive leadership and contributions to the institution.

His role has also intersected with broader student welfare issues, including scholarships for Cross River State indigenes and collaborations with organizations like the Nigerian Society of Botanical Scientists (NSBS), where he received birthday felicitations in April 2025, acknowledging his class presidency in biology education—potentially an undergraduate highlight before pivoting to computer science.

These efforts paint a picture of a multifaceted leader who balanced rigorous MSc studies in computer science—focusing on innovation and knowledge—with active engagement in campus governance.

UNICROSS, renowned for its programs in computing and technology, has seen Ewelu emerge as a role model for freshers and postgraduates alike. His story resonates amid ongoing discussions in Nigerian higher education about student leadership’s impact on academic success and institutional progress. As Ewelu steps into the next phase, his blend of resilience, family dedication, and community service sets a benchmark for aspiring scholars.
