Speaking to Channels Television on Saturday, the FCT Commissioner, Miller Dantawaye, said the police authorities have deployed in large numbers for the FCT Council poll.
He said the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has also ordered the deployment of a CP in addition to other police personnel to support the FCT Police Command.
“Deployments have commenced and virtually concluded. For us, every polling unit, as at this point, should have men unless they are a bit late. Electoral materials, to the best of my understanding, have started to arrive at polling units from RAC centers. Which is what we charged INEC to do. INEC is also very disposed to it. They made that commitment, so materials policemen have started arriving there,” the CP said.
“As it is, our reason for ensuring that we commence early is to commence accreditation and voting in good time, conclude in good time, and then, if possible, the whole process ends in good time.
“FCT Police Command is committed; we are very ready, we’ve deployed massively. Monitoring of the elections has commenced. The Inspector General of Police, in his wisdom, has deployed massively from the Force Headquarters to give us support.”
Channels Television reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would conduct polls in the nation’s capital.
Over 1.5 million FCT residents have their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to participate in the electoral process and choose leaders who would govern them at the grassroots.
Voters across the FCT are expected to elect chairmen in six area councils: Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali.
The FCT Council poll is the second election nationwide conducted under the supervision of the current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, who assumed office in October 2025, following the Anambra State Governorship Election.
Observers are recording low voter turnout, and apathy across the six (6) Council Areas, as residents defy movement restriction directives. The trend is worrisome, seeing as the 2027 election is just around the corner.
